On the 21-22 October 2008 the global steel industry participants met in Istanbul at the 1st international conference World Steel Semis Market
The event provided participants with an up-to-day overview of the semis production and trade worldwide through speaches of well-known market players and consultancy companies, including Ekinciler, Evraz Group, Esfahan Steel, Dillinger Huette, Çolakoğlu, Marcegaglia, Duferco, Midrex, Metal Expert, World Steel Dynamics, with the focus on billet on the first day and slabs during the day two.
While discussing billet market perspectives conference participants were quite gloomy, expecting further slowdown in the coming weeks. Still, most of them were expecting recovery of buying activity within a month, though it would not lead to substantial price recovery due to high stocks and poor finished longs market conditions.
EAF-based mini-mills seems to be in better position due to substantially reduced scrap prices, while integrated works, sourcing feedstock under annual contracts are already running below costs. Thus most of them foresee general price reduction of such basic raw materials as iron ore, coking coal and others next year.
Slab market fundamentals are less negative due to smaller number of market players, though prices are sliding as well. Flat products quotations, especially in plate segment, which are much higher than those for long products, are supporting slab prices to certain extent.
Besides giving market insight, the conference offered vast opportunities for networking and sharing opinions, especially during the open round-table discussion, bringing together major suppliers, semis consumers, trading companies as well as banks, shipping companies, representatives of specialized media and consultancy companies. More then 150 attendees had come from over 30 countries, including Turkey, Iran, Countries of the Gulf Region, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.
