CIS Steel and Raw Materials in the World markets: facts, events, results

The VI International Conference “CIS Steel & Raw Materials in the World Markets 2011” took place on the 18-19th of April, in InterContinental Hotel, Kyiv, Ukraine. This year the event has gathered about 300 participants representing 190 companies from 37 countries. It did become the perfect meeting place with major CIS steel and raw materials suppliers.

KEY QUESTIONS:
  • Conditions and prospects estimation of steel and raw materials world markets
  • Major consuming regions of CIS steel products
  • The strategies of CIS steel exporters
  • New investment and expansion projects at traditional sales markets as a challenge for CIS suppliers
  • CIS raw materials markets: main tendencies and perspectives
  • Steel and raw materials railway and sea-shipping transportation

These key-note market issues were disclosed in 20 presentations made by top-notch speakers from the world leading steel companies such as Colakoglu Metallurji, MMK Atakas, Ekinciler, A.T.Kearney, Krakatau Steel, Metalloinvest, Badische Stahl-Engineering, MySteel, Mechel, Byelorussian Steel Works, Zaporizhstal, Metal Expert, UralMetCom, Black Sea Shipping Service Ltd. etc.

The summarizing round table discussion “Market & Prices in 2011” was highly appreciated by participants, as it was fruitful, dynamic and meaningful. Panelists representing major steel and raw materials companies were sharing their competent opinions on such questions as: main factors determining pricing in 2011, impact of force-majeure factors on steel market, steel & raw materials price trends in 2011 etc.

Despite existence of different moods and opinions regarding price trend of 2011, mostly the speakers were quite positive. It’s obvious that price volatility is especially violent recent years, but at the same time it makes market players to be alert of these changes. No one is interested in price decreasing, neither traders nor producers. And it seems that now we are approaching to the price bottom: there are some signs of recovery in semis segment and there is also some interest to finished products at least from traders’ side as they feel this low ebb. High hopes were connected with end of May – beginning of June as well as already traditional end of September – beginning of October periods. For example, Mr.Ugur Dalbeler, CEO of Colakoglu Metallurji, noted that the year of 2011 is promised to be better for steel-makers than 2 previous ones and the price trend will be in general positive. At the same moment some participants admitted that stable raw materials prices along with their availability in the market in the end of spring will not be able to push steel prices up. Japanese and Middle Eastern factors were considered not to influence the steel market too much and even somehow encouraged activity.

In a conclusion it’s worthy to emphasis that the conference was very successful: it allowed not only to obtain important market data but also to network efficiently. Many positive opinions after the event have served as a real proof to this fact.
